Subject: [*] Applescripts for THINK 6 [*]

These are three AppleScripts for use in combination with THINK 6.0 or 6.0.1.
They require THINK Project Manager 6.0 or 6.0.1 and the Apple Event Manager to
run. To edit them you also need a Script Editor.

"Set THINK Options" is an utility to set the compiler options of projects
dropped on it. This is convenient when you have a multi-project project (no
pun
intended) and want to set the 68881, 68020 etcetera options. Unfortunately it
only makes it possible to set or get _all_ the options related to a certain
translator. THINK's interface to get and set the individual switches is rather
poor.

"THINK Bring Up to Date" opens and brings up to date projects dropped on to
it.
"THINK Remove Objects" does a "Remove Objects" on projects dropped on to it.

These scripts may be freely modified and distributed as long as the
accompanying
documentation is included and modifications are clearly indicated.
I specifically give permission to distribute them on the Infomac CD.

Also included is a partial patch to THINK's project manager to disable the
'open
which project' dialog box at startup, which does interfere with scripting. It
doesn't quite work yet, but I haven't got the time to improve on this, so I
just
include it as a clue for other hackers.

problems that bedeviled high-end Mac users. Charon is a 'freeware' fidonet

ZedZap (zmodem) file transfers. It is designed to be used together with
CounterPoint or Alice (v2.21 upwards), or to serve as a replacement for
MacWoof's built-in mailer. Other message editors should work as well.

Following is the latest release of Default Folder, version 2.42.  It fixes
a few incompatibilities and bugs, adds some rather esoteric behavior useful
mainly in networked environments, and adds a "rebound" feature in file
dialogs.

For those that don't know, Default Folder is a control panel device that
allows you to set up default folders for specified applications and desk
accessories (good for use with file launching utilities, and launching an
app that's sitting on the desktop). It also provides a pop-up menu in the
standard file dialog for navigating between often-used folders and disks.
Default Folder is shareware, and is uploaded as a compact pro archive.

TalkR 1.0 Demo AppleTalk Router.

This is a fully functional AppleTalk Router which runs on a dedi-
cated  386/486 PC clone. This version differs from the production
TalkR and TalkR/IP as follows:

-support for two rather than four network interface cards
-the zone name for one interface will always be "TalkR Zone."
-Only one router can be run on an AppleTalk internet at one time.
-No IP features such as MacIP, IPTalk or Remote Object Access.

The PC requires 2MB of memory, a 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive and two
network  interface  cards:  either two SMC 80X3X cards or one SMC
and one Dayna DL2000 LocalTalk card.  A monitor, vga card and and
keyboard are useful for initial setup, but are not required.

Included is a Macintosh based application to  manage  the  router
and minimal documentation.

The following is the public press release for Enigma 2.1

Enigma 2.1 is an application which can provide near absolute
protection for your sensitive documents and applications.  By
downloading this application you can encrypt files using a limited
version of the Government Standard DES algorithm.  For only $15
this can be upgraded to the full DES standard (US and Canada only).

If you would prefer your neighbors not see your accounting data,
your co-workers not see your performance appraisal, or your
competitor see your trade secrets then Enigma is an application you
will find very valuable.

Since version 2.0 Enigma has supported vaults which are like
very securely locked file cabinets.  Multiple files are stored in
them.  Files can be added, deleted, renamed, and extracted at any
time.  Security is much enhanced because filenames and lengths are
protected by encryption in addition to the contents.  No other
free or shareware encryption program offers the flexibility of
Enigma vaults.

Version 2.1 contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes to Enigma 2.0.
The primary features added to version 2.1 are:
   - Vaults now display the file size along with the file name
   - Vaults can now be compacted, improving disk space efficiency
   - There are now options which will prompt the user to confirm dangerous
     operations
   - The annoying crash when an incorrect key was entered has been eliminated
   - Cool Color Icons
   - You can now extract files from vaults by double clicking on the file name
     in the vault window.

Enigma 2.1 remains fully compatible with previous versions of Enigma.  If you
possess a version of Enigma prior to Enigma 2.1 I recommend this upgrade (VERY
recommended if you have a version older than 2.0).

Enigma 2.1 requires system 7.0 or later along with about 512K of memory and
200K
of disk space.  Documentation enclosed specifies ordering information for a
system 6 or earlier compatible version, but the vault features are
unavailable.

Included with the package is a program that overwrite and delete files so they
can not be recovered with a data recovery program such as Norton Utilities
(Enigma can also do this automatically if you request it).

Enigma 2.1 in this limited form is completely free.  No shareware guilt.

This is a demonstration version of Firefall, a new commercial
arcade game from Inline Software. Firefall needs 256 colors to
run.

Firefall can basically be described as "Centipede on steroids".
The animation is excellent, and the game is (in my opinion)
worth downloading just in order to have a gaze at. In
particular, it has this main-menu screen with gorgeous
neon-fonted text, and a kind of cold-fire mouse pointer that
has to be seen to be believed.

I am in no way involved with the people who created this game.
I'm just passing it along to the Internet archives. It was
originally uploaded from America Online.

Hi,
I found that the copy of FrontierRuntime is still Ver. 1
so I upload the copy I got from syrinx.kgs.ukans.edu.

It is said in the Readme file that the CD-ROM distribution
need the written permission from Userland.

As for the authors of the shareware, there is a program
offered by Userland such that you can get the full version
for $99.

There are aslo many script files for all kind of scripting
tools in the same archive.
for people face too-many-user frustrationwho face too-many-user frustration,
you
can
try those BBS in the Internet. Many of them get most of
the files from Info-Mac and UMich and update regularly.
One example is bbs.isca.uiowa.edu and its archive,
grind.isca.uiowa.edu.

On the other hand, more and more people get SL/IP or PPP
access which itself is great but relatively slow compared
with other type of connection, say, Ethernet or that
SuperHighway optical fiber. In turn, the SL/IP or PPP take
much more time to do a file transfer and these popular
ftp sites have less time slot for different people to
make connection. So, I suggests that if you have a account
oe even more on either a mainframe or workstation, and also
if the disk space quota is not too restricted, please try
to connect to these popular ftp sites from such account(s).
Then transfer the file down to your desktop. There are
two-fold of advantage. First, by doing so you free up
connection much much earlier and other people have more
chance to share these resources. Second, my own experience
shows that using the same SL/IP connection to do file
transfer by FTP client like Fetch, from a local machine
is always 20% to 50% faster than from a remote machine.
This is also the exact reason why people put mirror sites
cross Pacific and Atlantic.

Well I am very off the subject. I am sorry being in this way.

Here's a little program called Pathways Into Cheating for all of you that
play Pathways Into Darkness by Bungee Software. This program will allow you
to edit saved game files (for the full game, NOT the demo) to change your
character to make the game easier to play. It's got a nice mac interface
and has been fairly widely tested. Now you don't need to use a sector
editor to edit your characters!

Features include:
o  adding/deleting any item.
o  making grenade launchers w/ many grenades (autofire grenades!)
o  raising your health points.
o  raising your skill levels
o  teleporting to various locations in the pyramid.
o  making your character appear to be left-handed
o  recharging your crystals.
o  resetting the game time.
o  many shortcuts to make editing painless process.

This cheater is not supported by Bungee Software, so don't hassle them if
it doesn't work for you. Use only on a backup copy of your saved games
file.

This is a demonstration version (limited to a few levels only)
of Spin Doctor, a new commercial strategy/arcade type of game
by Callisto "SuperMazeWars" Corporation. Spin Doctor needs 256
colors or grays to run.

Spin Doctor is hard to describe -- it is truly like no game
I've ever seen before -- but basically you have to move a
rotating wand from point to point on a large grid, in search of
a 'goal' gridpoint. While doing so, you not only have to deal
with various types of enemy wands who stalk the grid in their
own mysterious ways, but also with spikes, acid droplets,
moving doors, bombs, fuses, and lots more fun stuff like that.

Your mileage may vary, but I think that if you liked Oxyd you
are probably going to LOVE Spin Doctor.

OK, I'm not a modem guru, but I thought I could plug this
puppy in to my fx and start communicating. I've tried it
both with McKnowledge (self-configured) and with Zterm with
no success -- even with McKnowledge's script for dialing up
compuserve. I couldn't get any help from the vendor techs.
Do any of you modem mavens have suggestions for me? Or am I
SOL?

DarkSide of the Mac 4.1 can run AfterDark modules, provided you give it
enough memory to work with. Happily found in The Archive & mirrors.
Postcardware, if I recall correctly, unless you want a pretty printed
manual...

A user over here had AD and had to trash it when he got a vx (yeah, poor
guy). It would suddenly hang and fail to fade out, requiring a reboot, even
after an upgrade to the latest, "x", version. DSo'M works just fine, cause
it's an application, not an extension (aka INIT, for oldtimers).

I'm pretty sure that SSG (let's see, Strategic Simulations Group?) has made a
series of such American Civil War battle simulations.  If they're anything
as good as Halls of Montezuma (US Marine battles), I think you'd be
impressed.

I switched from an Apple //c to Mac LC a year ago (and upgraded to the LC III,
best deal I ever made!).  The Apple IIe card only fits the LC series of Macs.
The IIc does not have AppleTalk capability.  A workstation card can be added
to
a //e to do AppleTalk, but not a //c.  The easiest thing I found to do was to
put everything I wanted onto Apple // 3.5 disks, then use Apple File Transfer
program on the Mac to switch them to Mac files.  Long files tend to get
truncated and may have to be broken into shorter segments.  If you can't get
access to a 3.5 Apple disk drive, you should be able to use a null modem cable
to connect the two computers together and run a communications program on
each to transfer the files to the mac.  I haven't tried that.  If I can give
you any other help, let me know.

Don't even try, Jerry. The card only works in the LC series and
in Color Classics.

I've heard of an Appletalk card for a //e, Jerry, but the IIc? No.
Where would you put it? Sort of like putting a Nubus card in a Duo.

Your cheapest solution is serial data communications. Connect the
Mac's modem port (mini-din8 to Hayes compatible modem cable, null
modem connector -- 25-pin, maybe 10 bucks at Radio Shack) to the
IIc's serial port. Fire up comm programs on each side, with the
same communications parameters, and transfer the files.

Getting the files from one box to the other is only half the battle.
They need to be in compatible format. There are translators for
AppleWorks to various Mac-side "works" programs, but durn little else.
You can sometimes use DIF format to transfer spreadsheets, but only the
data -- no equations. I could be more specific if you said which
programs' data files you wanted to get into useful form by
which Mac-side programs.

The problem is with NowMenus, it has decided that you want that key
combination on the menu.

Removal is easy, use the mouse to select GetInfo and the press delete,
before you let go. And it will disappear.

If you want to add a key command all you do is select the menu item and
then press the key that you want. A lot quicker than using Quickeys.

I have a user that has an Everex Carrier 24 Pocket Modem, and was wondering if
there was any possible way of hooking it up to a Mac.  He scrounged around in
his office and found a cable that has a "Mac Plus/Apple IIgs Hayes modem 6'"
label on it with a 25-pin male connector on one end and the standard 8-pin
male
connector on the other end that plugs into the serial (modem/printer) port.
The Pocket modem has a 25-pin female connector, but I know from past
experience
that just 'cuz two connectors FIT together doesn't mean that they necessarily
GO together.  If we were to get this to PHYSICALLY connect together, we still
need to get Mac-compatible software to drive it.

First, is this possible to hook this up?  If so, is this cable OK to use?  If
this is the wrong cable, any suggestions for a correct cable or even cable
pinouts to make this work would be appreciated.  Also any suggestions for
software to drive it.

If this is not possible, would anyone like to make an offer on this precious
relic?  :-)

Thanks to Allan Hunter for a workaround. An old fkey called Mount-em does
the trick. It has a hidden option, enabled by holding down the Control key
when executing the fkey. This option allows selective dismounting and
ejecting of any SCSI device. I haven't tried it yet with the floptical but
I'm quite sure it will work. The instructions for Mount-em warn that this is
not a good way to dismount volumes in general. Per Allan's suggestion, I
found Mount-em on wuarchive.wustl.edu/mirrors/info-mac/Old in the fkey
directory.

About that Myers-Briggs stack that just got uploaded to Sumex: yes! Your
supposition was correct.  The MBTI copyright is owned by Consulting
Psychologists Press in Palo Alto and I suspect they'd be mighty upset to
know that their test is sitting nearby on your computer.  They put some
restrictions on use of the test and only allow people who have some
psychological training to buy it.  It's not meant to be a parlor game.

That Dr. Saunders version of the stack has been floating around cyberspace
for a few years now.  I think it's based on the AV form of the test which
has been superceded by other forms for at least a decade.

I'd take it off if I were you, but if there's a funny version along with
it, I'd love to see it.

Subject: Intermittent PB100 failure

My PowerBook 100 (*just* out of guarantee) has developed an infuriating
hardware fault.  Symptoms are: if it's on, then a "bomb" message appears,
but with all the characters wildly disarranged.  Any attempt to restart
it (or turn it on, if it was off when the fault occurred) is met with
repeated chimes and nothing else.

This fault is proving hard to diagnose because it is intermittent (though
getting more frequent) and cures itself, after - typically - a day or
two.  I can't figure any pattern of events that cause either the attack
or the remission.  Only relevant post-factory hardware mod is the
installation of a 4Mb SIMM (making 6Mb in all).

Anyone recognise this?  What am I going to have to replace??

I'm having problems with my SLIP connection.  My configuration is:

   InterSLIP 1.0fc3
   MacTCP 2.02
   Fetch 2.1
   NCSA Telnet 2.5
   Eudora 1.4
   Hayes Accura 144 + FAX144

I am able to establish a SLIP connection and I am able to 'ping' (using
MacPing)
various hosts but if I attempt to ftp, telnet, or send or recieve mail, the
connection just seems to hang while an attempt is made to connect to any host
I
happen to specify.  I have configured everything as outlined in Adam's book
(thanks, Adam) and I have had the same results using only the necessary system
extensions.  If it matters, I make my SLIP connection to nwnexus.wa.com.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?  E-mail responses to me or to the list if

Subject: Irwin tape backup problems (Q)

Hi all,
	This is a long-shot, but I figured it might be worth posting.
We have an Irwin 80mb tape backup system that has been having problems.
It sometimes reads the directory of a backup ok, but can't restore
anything. Usually it says 'this tape is unformatted, it will take 69 minutes
to format' . This happens on all tapes and on different Macs. Does anyone
have any idea what the problem might be? At the least, does anyone have
an address of a repair place that could fix the drive? (Irwin is out of
business, and I'm very tired of waiting on hold for the Conner company

Subject: Killer Disk Syndrome

Some of you may recall my posting a few issues back, asking if anyone had
experienced a situation where a floppy disk somehow could destroy floppy
drives. I had five or six responses, all except one saying that the person
had experienced or heard of the problem. Suggested causes for the problem
included a subtley bent shutter, metal filings inside the plastic disk
case, or sand inside the case. Nobody gave a full, technical explanation of
exactly how a disk could go bad and then destroy drives, but I was pleased
to find out more about the issue anyway.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is over the incompatibilities/
flaws that Laserwriter 8.x has.  Since these are relatively few, and since
8.x coexists with the old 7.x driver without any clashes, I think it makes
mucho sense to upgrade.  You can always revert temporarily to the old
driver if you encounter a problem in printing certain types of graphics

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question.  The answer is, yes,
the Personal Laserwriter NTR will autoswitch just fine between
its parallel, serial, and localtalk ports, and you can connect Macs
and PCs to it with no problems.  If anyone needs more details about
the specifics of printing with DOS, Windows, Postscript, PCL, etc, send
me an e-mail and I'll forward you some of the replies.

We bought a Centris 650 with internal CD ROM and hoped to use its extra
speed and large hard disc to run our MS mail server on.
Wrong!
After the usual process of elimination it appears that one (or more) of the
Apple CD extensions/CP conflicts with the MS mail server causing frequent
crashes. This is in a plain vanilla system -as delivered. I haven't tried
to work out which file it is that is the problem. I am not paid to
troubleshoot software... Unfortunatly neither have microsoft as I haven't
heard anything from them since reporting it....
Has anyone else tried the MS mail server on a Mac with a CD? Can anyone
suggest anything we can do to persuade Microsoft to solve the problem
(apart from buying Quickmail which is rapidly becoming an option)? We have
a financial investment in MS mail software and upgraded the product to run
with system 7.1 (required by the Centris) so it seems wasteful to dump it.

Subject: Need a speech app for the blind

     One of the things that first occurred to me when I tried the
new plaintalk voice software is how useful it would be to blind people
in reading books.  A relatively inexpensive system will now make it
possible for the blind to scan in pages from books and have the computer
read the page to them .  I called the campus disabled services to come
over and "take a listen" and they were impressed with the quality and well
as the price.

     The thing that is missing is the plethora of applications I expected
to see.  What is needed is an application that reads a page and/or a file,
allows pausing, resay word, resay sentence, resay paragraph, spell word,
and easy editing of phonemes for mis-pronounced words.  All with easily
located keys controlling these functions.

     If anyone out there can develop this application, I think this
is a promising niche for Macintosh computers.

Here is a question for those who are knowledgeable about partitioning
hard drives:

I have read that when one partitions a large hard drive, it is best
to put frequently read/write files in the 1st partition, and applications and
system stuff in the 2nd partition. The exception to this is with graphics
programs that require a lot of read/writing while in progress (i.e. Photoshop)
The concept stems from the fact that files read/write faster on the outer
sectors of the drive, so keeping files here will help speed data transfer.

My question is, assuming this concept is true, which graphic programs would
be better suited to place in the outer partition? Applications like Excel,
that
are read once from the drive and put into RAM, are better off on the inner
partition, which is slower.

I am partitioning my drive, but would like to know which partition to put
my applications on.

lot less hunting around when I see something in the digest I want. When it
was first released, I'd just open Turbogopher if I saw something I wanted,
click on my /info-mac/recent bookmark, and get it. Now, I typically try
that, get the "server too busy" message, and try again throughout the day
or until I forget what I wanted. If 5 or 6 sites around the world (new
sites) would carry just this section, it would take care of a lot of the
traffic without requiring a lot of storage space. I would guess that 20MB
would typically do quite well. Any takers?

Sheesh ! I'll never risk my fully operational system by trying to patch it

I recently upgraded to QK 3.0 and immediately found that running
Applicon caused the latter to quit and the former to be rendered
inoperative (the shortcuts wouldn't work).  After much wrestling with
the problem I resorted to reading the documentation for Applicon and
noticed that it warns that some INITS like to borrow memory from active
applications, and that for such INITs, the memory setting for Applicon
might have to be increased.  I reset it for 200K and since then QK
works fine. You might be able to get by with less: I have RAM to spare.

In my quest for info, I consulted the CEForum on CompuServe and found
a  considerable number of conflicts being reported, with the sysop
fairly consistently replying that each problem would be turned over
to a support person and the complainer helped by email.  Not very
informative.  However, I did pick up a few tips.  NOW Toolbox and
SuperBoomerang have to be upgraded to 4.0.1p (an updater is available
in the MACSYS forum) and conflicts with other INITS can best be
avoided by having CEToolbox be the first INIT to load and the QK
3.0 extension load last.  Of course this cavalier advice ignores
the fact that many other extensions want to be placed in those
privileged positions, but there's the advice for what it's worth.

No doubt that copy protection is a pain in the butt for legal users of
software.  The problem is that we buy such software *knowing* that it is
copy protected, and in so doing we are accepting by implicit contract
the constraints of operating the software.

The only capitalistic way of stopping the practice is to offer an
equally good product that is NOT copy protected. And in fact, this is
what happened in the early days of the Macintosh, after which most
software came without copy protection.

One of the notable exceptions to lack of copy protection removal is
music software.  Most professional level music software (e.g., Vision
>From Opcode Systems) is copy protected, although there are exceptions
(e.g., Finale from Coda Music Software).  I've spoken to Opcode Systems
personally about the subject.  My understanding of their perspective is
that users (presumably the music composition community) are so larcenous
that they would sustain unacceptable losses without the protection.  Music
software is quite sophisticated and correspondingly difficult to create.
So far I do not know of anyone who has come out with a product that can
compete with the top copy-protected music applications that has not also
installed copy protection.

My solution to the problem has been to create a hard-disk partition on
which I install all copy-protected applications.  This partition is not
subject to any of my normal disk maintenance (optimization, desktop
rebuilds, backup).  I only have to remember to remove the software
before I do a disk re-format.  The installation disks from my publishers
all allow two installs.  So if I have a disk crash and cannot remove
the installed software, I can still get back up and running.  Then I
would have to call the publishers for a new installation disk (about
$20).  I have never had a problem except once in the early days of virus
protection.

Some new copy-protection methods tie the installed copy to a particular
hard disk, and on this hard disk you can copy to your heart's content.
Furthermore the installed copy is not sensitive (at least theoretically)
to disk optimization, compression, etc.  HOWEVER, I have found, after
doing a disk reformat and restore, that some applications which have
stored information about file locations for rapid access cannot access
the reconstituted disk with their old information.  It is as if each
disk reconstitution assigns to the disk a new internal id number (as I
know is assigned to each file/folder).  I suspect that a copy protected
application will complain that it no longer is on its "blessed" disk
after the disk has been reconstituted, but I don't know for sure.

As a user I certainly could do without copy protection, but when I think
of myself as a developer (which I am), I have to consider whether I can
sell enough copies so that in spite of piracy I can stay afloat or
whether I have to go the protection route.

I'm not sure why this happened, but I noticed it when I was grabbing

Anyway, the next time I checked, the files seemed to have returned.  I

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Under certain circumstances, access to System 7 file sharing is very slow
when using Appletalk Remote Access. The symptom is that the list of
available volumes takes about a minute to come on the screen after signing
in as a user or guest and then opening folders, etc is miserably slow. Only
happens on some machines, but I haven't found a common thread of system
version, network connection, etc.

One very strange symptom is that changing any of the parameters in Apple's
AppleShareSetup doohickie on the server machine causes the symptom to
disappear. However, it returns after a few minutes.

I suspect some sensitivity in Appletalk or the Filesharing software to the
relatively slow (14.4 kbps) ARA connection. Maybe some process repeatedly
timing out. Perhaps AppleShareSetup resets some timeout value temporarily. I
want to emphasize, though, that it is not the speed of the connection per se
causing the problem. When volumes mount on a working machine, they mount in
a few seconds, compared to a minute or so when the problem exists.

I've had luck with past posting and would now like to put out a
request for a friend of mine. He has a mac II si with 5mb of ram.
To upgrade the simms, he has to replace all 4 1 meg simms with
4 of the same kind. He'd like to find someone or two who can sell him
some 2 meg simms cheap. Of course if you 4 meg simms leftover from some
upgrade he'll take those but I think he will have better luck looking
for 2's. Remember, these are the old style simms, not the new 72 pin
kind.

Don't forget the Thread Manager (found in ftp.apple.com). That system
extension can allow pre-emptive multitasking NOW, without 7.1 Pro.
Unfortunately, as of this writing, only one application seems to use it: a
diskette formatter written (I think) by Alessandro Montalcini, which allows
backgrounding (this application is found in apps at sumex).

We currently use Quicken 4.0 for bookkeeping and are currently using
Timeslips III for project tracking.  Timeslips III is similar to what we
want, but we need something easier to use.  The program must also NOT
require an accounting degree or background.

Greetings from Lahore, Pakistan. I recently purchased the info-mac
CDROM from Walnut Creek. I don't have ftp access to the internet. The
CDROM is currently the only way to get info-mac archives.

I tried using rnMac, a news reader/posting program submitted by Roy
Wood of Univ. of Toronto. The readme file mentioned that it works in
conjuction with ToadNews, UUCP, and Fernmail. I have all except
ToadNews. I searched through the entire CD but there was not
ToadNews. I send email to Roy but the message bounched with the error
that Toronto mailer knows of noone by the user name "rrwood".
Evidently Roy has left Toronto and I don't have his email. I am thus
taking the liberty to ask you where I can get ToadNews. If the
binhexed version of TaodNews package is less than 40K, could you
please mail it to me? Otherwise, let me know of an ftp site (it could
be sumex-aim info-mac archive or michigan) that I can have a friend
log into and pick up ToadNews. If you know of any other news program
that uses UUCP, please let me know.
